New York Times Inquires What Recession North Dakota?

North Dakota saw national media attention this weekend thanks to a New York Times article. It's been a big weekend for North Dakota. Front and center on Saturday, North Dakota took to the cover page of the New York Times in style with the headline "A Placid North Dakota Asks, Recession? What Recession?"The article outlines how North Dakota is sitting in a unique economic situation in comparison to much of our country.

Roxanne Steidl Joins Chamber Staff

The Chamber is pleased to welcome Roxanne Steidl as our newest member of the Chamber staff. Roxanne will be working with our Motor Vehicle Branch Office as well as handling other Chamber Administrative duties. She and her husband Leon farm near Oriska and have 3 children. Prior to coming to the Chamber, Roxanne was employed by Quality Bank in Fingal for 18 years.

The website joins the new Chamber and Development Corporation website http://www.valleycitynd.com/ to provide a comprehensive internet destination for all we have to offer in our great community!

New Website Goes Live

May 6th marked the official launch of the new Chamber and Economic Development Website http://www.valleycitynd.com/. Some portions are still under construction so check back often for further updates.

The website is just part of the marketing plan developed by Flint Communications for the Valley Development Group that was announced at the joint Chamber and Development Corporation banquet at the Valley City Eagles Club on May 6th. Both organizations thank the 130 members who attended the event.

Martin Receives Golden Keyboard Award

Congratulations to City County Health District's Angie Martin, recipient of the 2008 "Golden Keyboard Award" in recognition of Administrative Professionals Day. Each year, the Valley City Chamber of Commerce asks their members to submit letters explaining why the best adminstrative professional in Valley City works for them. Chamber President LouVay White and Executive VP Dean Ihla were joined by the Chamber Ambassadors to present the award to Angie this morning. The following letter of recommendation was submitted by City County Health District Director Theresa Will:

Angie Martin was hired to work at City County Health District as our Office Manager in April of 2004. Angie is able to multi-task as needed to keep the many current and upcoming projects at City County Health organized. She is an integral part in almost everything that is done through City County Health. Angie assists all 20 employees working at City County Health in keeping track with radio talk spots, articles for the Times Record, phone calls, etc. Angie is capable and willing to dive into any project regardless of the complexity and then always obtains an excellent result.

In addition to the excellent skills that she brings to our office, Angie is a very kind and caring individual who treats every client who enters City County Health District with respect and compassion, which is truly what public health is all about. Angie is the glue that holds City County Health District together!

Congratulations to Angie and all the other Adminstrative Professionals for a job well done!

Shirley Named New President of VCSU


BISMARCK, N.D. - The State Board of Higher Education today named Steven W. Shirley, Ph.D., president of Valley City State University in Valley City, N.D. Shirley is vice president and dean of student affairs at Dakota State University, Madison, S.D. He is responsible for undergraduate admissions and oversees the university relations department. He is a former business faculty member and director of study abroad at the University of Minnesota, Crookston."Members of the State Board of Higher Education were very impressed by Dr. Shirley's passion for and understanding of Valley City State University. His leadership and teambuilding skills will be strong assets to this university," said John Q. Paulsen, SBHE president. "The Valley City State University presidential search committee brought a tremendous amount of energy and commitment to this process, and they forwarded two highly qualified finalists for this position. In the final analysis, however, Steven Shirley's professional experience more closely parallels the expectations of the VCSU presidency.""Dr. Shirley has a strong understanding of what's important to students," said Bill Goetz, chancellor of the North Dakota University System. "His background clearly demonstrates that he is someone who can drive the growth of this university."Shirley holds a doctorate in teaching and learning: higher education, a master's degree in marketing and global business, and a bachelor's degree in marketing and management, all from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, N.D. He also is a graduate of the Institute for Educational Management at the Harvard Graduate School of Education Program in Professional Education, Cambridge, Mass.Shirley will become president of VCSU July 1, 2008. He will succeed Dr. Ellen Chaffee who announced her upcoming retirement in Sept. 2007 after 15 years of distinguished service. He will be paid an annual salary of $155,000 and will have a three-year contract.
